Black Strap Molasses Selenium Is The Key To Fighting Cancer

Black strap molasses is a syrup liquid that is the by-product in the process of making white sugar from sugar cane. It is one of the healthiest alternatives to sugar and other artificial sweetener.

Black strap molasses is an excellent source for many vitamins and minerals. From iron, potassium, magnesium, copper, Vitamin B6 to selenium, the one mineral I want to concentrate on in this article.

Selenium is one of the key minerals to fighting cancer. Studies have shown that the occurrence of cancer among the people that took 200 mcg of selenium daily for several years compared to those taking a placebo was drastically reduced.

Selenium helps protect against all cancers but it has been found that the mineral has a powerful effect on prostate, colorectal and lung cancers.

In combination with vitamins A an E the use of selenium during chemotherapy can reduce the toxicity of the chemotherapy drugs. The key to fighting cancer cells in treatment is the ability for selenium to attach to protein cells without further metabolism, strengthening the cells. While minimizing damage to the normal cells the selenium helps the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation.

Other functions of Selenium

Not only is selenium the key to fighting cancer, it has many other function in a healthy body. Selenium, with its role as the body’s best antioxidant, has properties that will support a healthy immune system. Research shows that in conjunction with vitamin C, vitamin D and beta carotene, selenium works to block the chemical reactions that create free radicals in the body.

It was discovered in 1990 and studied since, that selenium, along with iodine, is critical in the proper function of the thyroid gland. The correct combination of these two minerals will lead to a balanced production and use of the thyroid hormones.

This essential mineral is also required for the production of the enzyme estrogen sulfotranserfase which is required to break down estrogen in the body. It is also essential in the production of the hormone testosterone.

Food sources with Selenium

Too much of this mineral can actually be toxic to the system, but unfortunately most of the population is deficient. The recommended dosage is about 200 micrograms per day.

The selenium content in vegetables and grains depends on the content of the mineral in the soil it is grown in. Soil that has a higher content of volcanic ash and soil that is irrigated by seawater are said to contain higher levels of selenium.

Along with black strap molasses other good dietary sources are: egg yolks, seafood, poultry, garlic, onions, asparagus, broccoli, seed, and whole grains. One Brazil nut, when grown in a selenium rich soil, will provide up to 120 micrograms of the mineral.

In summary this mineral may not only reduce your risk of developing cancer and it said that people that are deficient tend to be much grumpier than those that are not deficient. So fortify your diet with foods rich in this essential mineral and you may be much happier.
