The Carrier is classified as an extremely heavy air unit. This is considered to be late game artillery, so do not focus building them early game. They are very durable and have the ability to overpower almost any enemy that goes their way.
Some units that they are extremely effective against are other air militia like the Thors from the Terran, Mutalisks from the Zerg or Phoenixes from the Protoss.
The Protoss Carrier Build Order
Start by producing Probes until you reach 9/10 supply. Once you hit this point, build a Pylon right away. Keep producing Probes with 2 Chrono Boosts unit you reach 12/18. At this point, you will want to build yourself a Gateway.
Construct yourself another Pylon and begin mining for vespene gas. The next thing on your list will be to set up a Cybernetics Core. Train a couple of Zealots with Chrono Boost, while gathering more gas for your resources. Build another Gateway to ensure that you will have enough production power.
Research Warp Gates at your Cybernetics Core, then get yourself a Starport after that. Once these are complete, you will be ready to raise your army.
The Protoss Carrier Rushing Strategy
To rush, you will want to add some Phoenixes into the mix to dissipate the damage within your army. Use your Phoenixes to distract and take care of the smaller battles so that your Carrier will be able to inflict some serious damage on buildings and units that matter. Remember that they are expensive to make, so properly micro to ensure that you can use them to their fullest potential before getting destroyed.
The Protoss Carrier Counter
Every unit in Starcraft 2 has a weakness. What you want to avoid fighting are the Vikings from the Terran, Corruptors from the Zerg and the Void Rays from the Protoss. If you see your enemy building these, make your own counters or change up your strategy. You do not want to spend lots of resources only to get destroyed in a matter of seconds.
